My challenge to you, should you choose to accept it, is to double your book sales from last month to this coming month. So whether you want to track them from over the last 30 days or you want to track it from the previous month, the goal is to double those sales.
Today’s tip is about benchmarking your past and present marketing activities. We can’t really have a cohesive challenge if we don’t really think through what we have done in the past that has worked and what have done that hasn’t.
To make it easy for you, I have created a marketing inventory sheet. If you go to the link at the bottom of your screen, it’s publishyourpurpose.com/marketing. It asks questions like: “How many visitors do you have to your website? Have you run BookBub ads? Have you done Amazon ads? Are you active on social media?” It asks a lot of very inventory based types of questions.
But the bigger question that I ask in the sheet, that I encourage you to download, is, “What activities do you enjoy doing? What activities don’t you enjoy doing and what is it about them that you like or dislike?” Now, the reason I asked that is from a marketing standpoint, it is so much easier to do something that you like doing versus doing something that is painful to be doing.
I have a number of authors that I have worked with that hate being on video. So I would never recommend a marketing strategy to them that would say, “Let’s get out there and get your face on every possible podcast that we can be on that has a video component to it.” Rather, we would be very strategic and say, “All right, this author doesn’t like being on video, but they love being on audio. So how are we going to adapt the marketing strategy accordingly?”
Whether you sold 10 books last month or you sold 10,000 books last month, it doesn’t matter. And I want to reinforce this over and over again throughout this challenge is that this isn’t a comparison game. You might be looking at someone else who’s written and published a book and is just out there kicking ass and taking names and has huge amounts of sales. You may not have a huge amount of sales and that’s okay, because what we’re trying to do is double your sales from that last month. We’re not trying to double someone else’s sales from last month.
So what you want to do is go to publishyourpurposepress.com/marketing, download that inventory sheet and work on it between now and tomorrow. Ultimately, what that’s going to help you do is it’s going to help you track and measure the success of all the activities that I’m going to encourage you to do over the next 30 days.
At the top of that sheet, it very clearly asks,“How many books did you sell last month?” If you are traditionally published, there is a strong likelihood that you don’t have sales figures specifically from last month and that’s totally fine. So go to your royalty report, see whatever the last month you’ve got, which is probably from not this past quarter, but the previous quarter, and look at that 30 day period.
If you have self published or work with a hybrid publisher, ask your publisher about the amount of sales you received in the last month and write it at the top of the sheet. That way we will have a very clear, realtime number to go against to see how we can improve your book sales and your marketing strategies over the next 30 days.
